Michigan Ave., Suite 2800, Chicago, Iliamna 60601] Getting divorced is probably one of the most traumatic events any individual is going to go through. [GRAPHIC: George M. Sanders, Attorney At Law] Some divorces are easy, some divorces are very difficult, but even the easy ones are quite traumatic. I understand that this is a very difficult process for you and a very difficult time for you, and I’m going to make sure that I treat that with the respect that it deserves.

I’ve been a litigator for over 20 years. I’ve concentrated on family law matters for over seven years. The most important thing to understand about divorce cases, it’s a process that is not linear. There are going to be ups, there are gonna be downs, but at the end of the day, the only thing that matters is what does the judgment at the end of the case look like? Are you getting, at the end of the case, either the financial settlement that you’re entitled to, custody arrangement that you’re entitled to or the visitation that you’re entitled to. It’s important in any divorce to keep sight of the ultimate objective and the end goal, ’cause it’s all too easy to get wrapped in the details of the case and really lose sight of what’s really important. DAVID E. RAPOPORT: You’re asking what you should and shouldn’t do after an accident. Let me explain some of the most important basics. First, you should take care of your medical condition by getting excellent care.
[GRAPHIC: Seek medical attention, but make sure evidence is being preserved]
DAVID E. RAPOPORT: While you’re in the emergency room, somebody should be preserving the evidence. That might be the difference between winning and losing a case later.
[GRAPHIC: Get police involved as soon as possible]
DAVID E. RAPOPORT: Second, there’s a need to get the police involved. It’s appropriate to talk to the police about what you remember happening. It’s appropriate to make sure that the police talk to the other party about what happened. Some of the things you should not do: don’t talk to the other side’s insurance company.
[GRAPHIC: Do not talk to other side's insurance company]
DAVID E. RAPOPORT: When injured people decide to talk to the other side’s insurance company, it’s like hanging out with the enemy. And the reason that they’re the enemy is that the company that the insurance adjustor works for profits by either unfairly denying the claim or underpaying it.
[GRAPHIC: Do not underestimate your injuries]
DAVID E. RAPOPORT: Second, don’t comment about I feel fine, because oftentimes the consequences of injuries don’t ripen for a while. So staying quiet about that is a better strategy.
